What kingdom does bacteria belong to?
Bacteria belongs to the Monera kingdom.
Are bacteria multi/uni cellular organisms?
Bacteria are unicellular organisms
Are bacteria prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
Bacteria are prokaryotes as they have no membrane bound nucleus or membrane bound cell organelles.
Why are bacteria known as prokaryotic?
Bacteria are prokaryotic as they have no membrane bound nucleus or no membrane bound organelles.
How are bacteria classified?
Bacteria are classified by shape:
Spherical (cocci)
Rod (bacillus)
Spiral (spirillum)
What are the names of bacteria’s 3 shapes?
Spherical (cocci)
Rod (bacillus)
Spiral (spirillum)
What is an example of a spherical bacteria?
Spherical (cocci): e.g. Staphylococcus aureus causes pneumonia.
What is an example of a rod-shaped bacteria?
Rod (bacillus): e.g. bacillus anthracis causes anthrax.
What is an example of a spiral shaped bacteria?
Spiral (spirillum): e.g. Treponema pallidum causes syphilis.
What is the cell wall of a bacterium made of?
The cell wall is made of murein
What is the function of the cell wall of a bacterium?
Cell wall- gives shape and structure.
What does the cytoplasm of a bacterium contain?
Cytoplasm- Contains ribosomes (protein synthesis) and storage granules - but no mitochondria or chloroplasts.
What does the cytoplasm of a bacterium not contain?
The cytoplasm contains ribosomes and storage granules but no mitochondria or chloroplasts.
What nuclear material does bacteria contain?
Nuclear material- single chromosome of DNA.
What is the function of a capsule of a bacterium?
Capsule’s function is protection.
What is the flagella of a bacterium’s function?
Flagella’s function is movement.
What is the plasmid that’s found in bacteria?
Plasmid- a circular piece of DNA that can move from one cell to another. (Acts as a vector and caries genes).
What’s is the name of the tail like structure that helps movement of a bacterium?
Flagella
What is a bacterium’s protective coat called?
Capsule
What does it mean if a bacterium has a capsule?
The capsule is not always present. Bad if present means it’s a pathogen.
