Explain asexual reproduction in yeast? (4p)
Asexual reproduction in yeast
: Budding-
Nucleus of parent cell divides by mitosis.
Daughter nuclei enters a small developing bud on the outside of the yeast cell.
This bud can separate from parent to become a new individual.
Sometimes the bud doesn’t separate but it self can bud, by this long colonies of yeast cells can develop.
What is budding?
Asexual reproduction in yeast.
What does the nucleus of the parent cell do in budding?
Nucleus of the parent cell divides by mitosis.
What enters the developing bud on the outside of the yeast cell during budding?
Daughter nuclei enters a small developing bud on the outside of the yeast cell.
What can be made when the bud doesn’t separate and buds itself?
Sometimes the bud doesn’t separate but can itself bud, by this long colonies of yeast cells can develop.
What are 3 beneficial importances of fungi?
Source of food eg. mushrooms
Yeasts can be used to make bread and alcohols - anaerobic respiration.
Penicillum notatum is used to make the antibiotic penicillin in the pharmaceutical industry.
What fungus is used to make the antibiotic penicillin?
Penicillum notatum is used to make the antibiotic penicillin in the pharmaceutical industry.
What can yeast be used to make?
Yeast can be used to make bread and alcohols - anaerobic respiration.
What are 3 harmful importances of fungi?
Saprophytic fungi can spoil food eg. Rhizopus grows on bread.
Parasitic fungi can infect animals eg. athlete’s foot and ringworm.
Phytophthora infestans, potato blight fungus causes disease in potato plants.
What is the name for the potato blight fungus?
Phytophthora infestans potato blight fungus causes disease in potato plants.
What type of fungus is Phytophthora infestans?
Phytophthora infestans (parasitic fungi) potato blight fungus causes disease in potato plants.
What are 2 parasitic fungi that can infect animals?
Parasitic fungi such as athlete’s foot and ringworm can infect animals.
What kind of fungi can spoil food? Example?
Saprophytic fungi can spoil food eg. Rhizopus grows on bread.
Give 3 points on edible and poisonous fungi?
Some fungi are edible eg. Field mushrooms
Many are poisonous if eaten. eg. death cap.
Difficult to distinguish between poisonous and edible varieties.
