  1. colic
    The condition when a healthy baby fusses or cries for a prolonged period of time
  2. shaken baby syndrome
    A form of physical child abuse whereby a n infant is repeatedly shaken.  The whiplash causes bleeding in the brain, which in turn can result in such problems as visual impairments, permanent neurological damage, or death.

    The branches of the neurons that allow for synaptic communication

    Nerve fibers that conduct electrical impulses away from the nerve's cell body
  15. myelin
    A while, fatty substance that grows around the axons of a neuron in order to allow for electrical conductivity
  16. limbic system
    a group of brain structures (including the amygdala, hippocampus, cingulate gyrus, hypothalamus, and other parts) that support various functions, including emotion, attachment, long-term memory, and behavior.
  17. parental separation anxiety
    A parent's unpleasant emotional state of concern and apprehension about leaving a child
  18. negative emotionality
    When a child's emotional state is characterized by negative affect, such as irritability and anger

    A research procedure in which the participant records daily, in a notebook, the data of interest to the researcher
  20. Socializatin
    processes whereby children are taught skills, values, and behavior necessary for competent functioning
  21. psychological control
    consists of parental efforts to constrain, invalidate and manipulate the child's psychological and emotional experiences and expression.
  22. Structuring
    to the degree to which parents provide a predictable, organized environment for a child.
  23. affluent families
    families that earn greater than twice the country's median income
