  1. Internet Appliance
    A SOHO device providing Internet routing via a DSL, cable, or satellite link.
  2. Intranet
    A network designed for information processing within a company or organization.
  3. Java
    Programming language used to create web server applications (J2EE) and client-side applications (running in the Java VM).
  4. JavaScript
    Scripting language used to add interactivity to web pages and HTML-format email.
  5. Kernel
    A low-level piece of code responsible for controlling the rest of the operating system.
  6. Kinetics
    Mobile devices use accelerometers and gyroscopes to detect when the device is moved and this can be the basis of a control system.
  7. LCD
    Liquid Crystal Display. A display technology where the image is made up of liquid crystal cells controlled using electrical charges.
  8. MAPI
    Message Application Programming Interface. Windows messaging interface used primarily by the email client software Outlook to communicate with an Exchange mail server.
  9. Mapping
    Establishing a connection with a drive or file.
  10. Markup Language
    System of tags used to structure a document.
  11. Modem
    Modulator/Demodulator. Modems are devices that are used to convert the digital signals from a computer into the appropriate analog signal that is required for transmission over public phone lines.
  12. MPEG
    Moving Pictures Expert Group is an ISO standards committee for audio and video compression and playback.
  13. Multimedia
    Multimedia refers to PC components that can playback and record sound and video.
  14. NAS
    Network Attached Storage. A storage device with an embedded OS that supports typical network file access protocols.
  15. Partition
    A discrete are of storage defined on a hard disk using either the Master Boot Record (MBR) scheme or the GUID Partition Table (GPT) scheme.
  16. OCR
    Optical Character Recognition. Software that can identify the shapes of characters and digits to convert them from printed images to electronic data files that can be modified in a word processing program.
  17. PCI Express
    PCI Express (PCIe) is the latest expansion bus standard. PCI Express is serial with point-to-point connections.
  18. PIM
    Personal Information Manager. Provides features for storing and organizing information such as contacts and calendar events and appointments.
  19. PKI
    Public Key Infrastructure. Asymmetric encryption provides a solution to the problem of secure key distribution for symmetric encryption.
  20. Subnet Mask
    An IP address consists of a Network ID and a Host ID. The subnet mask is used to distinguish these two components within a single IP address.
