Where were you exiting from?
I was exiting my residential driveway, located on the west side of Mason, which was across from a business complex at around 5:30 pm.
-
Explain what you were doing:
-crossing?
-where were you trying to go?
-merge where?
I needed to cross the two southbound lanes of mason to make my way into the two-way center turn lane, pause, and slowly merge into the northbound lanes of mason (towards Devonshire) once it was safe to proceed.
-
Before crossing:
Before crossing the lanes, I looked to my left to make sure there were no cars coming south and looked to my right to make sure the northbound lanes were also free.
-
explain how you started moving
I slowly and cautiously worked with my brakes to start crossing the first southbound lane, focusing on my left as there were parked cars obstructing my view. The first lane was free so I cautiously and successfully crossed it
by the time I got to the second lane, I saw the other driver approaching me about 4-5 cars away-- a safe distance to enter the center lane.
-
Explain making my way into the center two way lane:
-car merged in front of me...
-how was my car positioned
However, it was at this time that a car from the opposite lane abruptly merged in front of me causing me to brake but not permitting me to fully adjust my car into the center lane because I was blocked by him.
At this time, about one-third of my vehicle was sticking out of the lane and I was unable to reposition my car fully into the center divider lane so I was stopped.
-
Explain how you turned to your left:
-where was the other car?
-how far was she
I turned to my left and it was at this time I saw the other vehicle a Nissan Altima heading in my direction.
She seemed about 3-4 car lengths away so I was sure she had ample time to see me and brake.
However, she didn't try to slow down or swerve and ended up hitting the gas tank of my driver's side-- causing my side bags to deploy.
-
Explain trying to exit the vehicle:
-how you were in shock...
-what her son stated
-hesitant to give me her insurance info
In an absolute shock and disorientation state, I did not know how to exit the vehicle. I called my dad who came to rescue me from the vehicle after 8-10 minutes--by having me crawl under the airbags so that I could exit.
I was still in disbelief when the other driver was hesitant to give me her insurance information--angrily repeatedly that she clearly had the right of way.
Her son stated that this is a dangerous intersection, we drive by here all the time while his mom visibly looked annoyed and told him to shut up.
