  1. Frontal Lobe
    largest lobe

    • thinking, planning, emotional control
    • voluntary muscle movements
  2. Occipital lobe
    Primary receiving area for visual information
  3. Parietal lobe
    Processes somatic information
  4. Temporal lobe
    Primary receiving area for auditory information
  5. Thalamus
    • Bilateral "relay station" in brain
    • Processes most info to and from higher brain centers
  6. Hypothalamus
    • Homeostasis & hormone release
    • Sleep and circadian rhythms (wake up before alarm)
    • Body temp, hunger, thirst
    • Hormone secretion/ reproductive behaviors
  7. Pituitary gland
    attached to the base of the brain, hormones affect the function of other glands
  8. Amygdala
    2 structures on the sides of your brain

    • responsible for the fear response & emotional experiences
    • Our ability to recognize the emotions of others

    Phobia therapy involves this area
  9. Hippocampus
    • Emotional regulation & emotional memories (esp in men)
    • Involved in spatial abilities & autonomic nerv. system
    • Damage to hippocam. = impulsivity
  10. Cerebellum
    • Coordinated, voluntary movements
    • (playing piano, kicking or throwing a ball)
  11. Medulla
    Breathing, heart rate, digestion, other vital reflexes (swallowing, coughing, vomiting, sneezing)
  12. Pons
    Left and right side coordination of movement and sensations
  13. Brocas area
    plays role in speech production
  14. Wernikes area
    Plays a role in speech comprehension and understanding meaningful speech
