The Heart

  1. Encloses the heart, holds it in place
    Pericardium
  2. Fibrous pericardium
    Outer layer
  3. Parietal pericardium & visceral pericardium
    Inner layer
  4. Outer layer. This IS the visceral pericardium
    Epicardium
  5. Middle layer Cardiac muscle (pumps)
    Myocardium
  6. Inner layer. Squamous epithelium lines & covers valves
    Endocardium
  7. Upper chambers. Separated by the interatrial septum
    Atria (atrium)
  8. Small earlike flaps
    Auricles
  9. Lower chambers. Separated by the interventricular septum
    Ventricles
  10. Prevent blood from flowing backwards
    Valves
  11. Found between atria and ventricles
    Atrioventricular
  12. 3 cusps (flaps) Found between right atrium & right atrium
    Tricuspid valve
  13. 2 cusps. Found between left atrium & left ventricle
    Bicuspid (mitral) valve
  14. Found between ventricle and vessel leaving it
    Semilunar valves
  15. Between right ventricle and pulmonary trunk
    Pulmonary valve
  16. Between left ventricle and aorta
    Aortic valve
  17. Threadlike structure that attach the cusps
    Chordate tendinae
  18. Arteries, capillaries, veins that provide the myocardium with O2 & nutrients.

    Originate from the aorta
