Functions of the nervous system
Collect info internally and externally
Process and derive meaning from the info collected
Forward info to the appropriate party
Dispatch message to the brain to que a proper response
-
What is the CNS?
Composed of the brain and spinal cord.
-
Two main divisions of the nervous system
Central Nervous System
Peripheral Nervous System
-
6 Main Sections of the brain:
Cerebellum
Cerebrum
Medulla
Brainstem
Thalamus
Hypothalamus
-
Cerebellum
Location
Function
- Sits right above the upper portion of the brainstem.
- Coordinates movement and is where various features of motor learning takes place.
- Balance, cordination, speech, posture, muscle memory
-
Cerebrum:
Location:
Function:
- Sits at the top portion of the cranial cavity. Separated by a left and right hemisphere. It is separated in the middle by the longitudinal fissure. A bundle of fibers that allows the two haves to work together is called the corpus colassum.
- Left side of cerebrum managed right side of body. And right side of cerebrum manages left side of body.
- There are 4 lobes that make up the cerebrum.
-
Frontal lobe
Location and function
- Front section of the cerebrum. The biggest lobe.
- Contains the Primary Motor Cortex (M1) —main component of the brain involved in electrical impulses responsibility for motor functions.
- Problem solving
- Speech and Articulatoin
- Accountable for Personality Traits
-
Temporal Lobe
Location:
Function:
- Lobe of the cerebrum that is located on on both side of the brain nearest the ear (2).
- Auditory processing, visual memory, Language learning, emotional association.
-
Parietal Lobe
Location :
Function:
- Part of the cerebrum that is located between the frontal lobe and occipital lobe.
- Somato Sensory Coretex is located within this lobe. This lobe functions extremely fast. M/s. This is involved in locality of touch perception, distinguishing pain levels and temperature. Depth and perception.
-
Occipital Lobe
Location:
Function:
- Posterior lobe of the cerebrum sits in the back of the cortex.
- Processes visual information rapidly
-
Medulla:
Location :
Function:
- Section of the brainstem. Responsible for many autonomic functions.
- Aids in the control of region of the body. Motor function.
- Helps control breathing
- Helps control heart rate
- Dilates blood flow.
- Functions involtarily.
- Causes coughing and sneezing
- Controls vomiting and swallowing
- Can switch digestion on and off.
-
3 parts of the brainstem:
Medulla
Pons
Midbrain
-
Pons
- Section of the brainstem that functions to relay messages.
- Vestibulocochlear Nerve: single sounds from ear into our brain
- Abducen Nerve: single that allows eyes to look horizontally
- Trigeminal Nerve: single that allows feeling within the face
- Facial Nerve: Single that allows us to make facial expressions.
Linked to managing sleep cycles.
-
Midbrain
- Section of the brainstem that relays messages between the cerebrum and the cerebellum. Processes sensory data obtained from the eyes and ears with data from muscle movements to adjust movements.
- Functions involuntarily.
-
Thalamus
- Sits right above the brainstem. Housed between the midbrain and cerebral cortex.
- Inform the cerebral cortex of any scenery or motor stimuli.
- Helps to control sleep, aids in keeping us awake and alert.
-
Hypothalamus
Connects the nervous system to the endocrine system.
Regulates body temperature.
Aids in certain metabolic processes.
Regulates the autonomic nervous system
-
Spinal cord
Administers sensory data from brain to ody
Helps perform slight reflexes.
Administers sensory data directly from PNS to brain.
-
Spinal cord has how many pairs of spinal nervous?
31.
