RAD4046 (Topic 10): Radiation effect on tissues

  1. list the three things radiation damage depends on
type of cell irradiated, dose received from the radiation and volume of tissue irradiated.
  2. what can biological effects be split into
    somatic effects, genetic effects
  3. within somatic effects list some acute (early) and chronic (late) effects
    • early- overdose/ accident cases like in screening or fluoroscopy,
    • late- chromosomal damage, includes cancers, mentally ill children and fibrosis etc.
  4. list some genetic effects
mutations in the ova/sperm, other disorders including leukaemia, birth defects and retardation.
  5. what two things can radiation effects be split into
    harmful tissue/deterministic effects, stochastic effects
  6. what is the difference between deterministic effects and stochastic effects
    • deterministic- have a threshold on effect it can occur, severity increases with dose,
    • stochastic- happen by pure chance/random, no threshold for effect and frequency increase with dose.
  7. give an example for deterministic and stochastic effect
    • deterministic- male sterility and cataracts,
    • stochastic- induction of cancers (reason why there is no such thing as safe dose of radiation too).
