  1. ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
    -Affects both the motor cortex of the brain and the motor neurons associated with voluntary muscle

    • –Degenerative:
    • 100% fatal
    • Muscle of chest no longer receive impulse to contract/expand ~ makes breathing difficult

    • –Symptoms show up at 50+
    • Death in 2-3 yrs after symptoms display

  2. Polio
    • –Viral disease caused by direct exposure; highly contagious
    • Inflammation & destruction of spinal neurons

    • –Incubation time (5-35+ days)
