Chapter:7 Cell Structure

• It’s the site of respiration.
• Very active cells (use a lot of energy) have lots of mitochondria.eg. muscle, nerve cells.
• Inactive cells contain few mitochondria.
• Each mitochondrion has its on loop of DNA.
• The mitochondrion contains 2 membranes- an outer smooth membrane and a folded inner membrane.
• The crest of each fold is called a crista.

In the mitochondrion

Respiration: the controlled release of energy from food.

Very active cells have lots of mitochondria because they use a lot of energy. eg. muscle cells, nerve cells.

Inactive cells

The mitochondrion has 2 membranes- an outer smooth membrane and a folded inner membrane.

Medium in which all metabolic reactions occur.

The nucleolus makes RNA and ribosomes.

Destroys old, worn out cell organelles.

The living cell, including the cell membrane but excluding the nucleus (and large vacuole in plant cells).

Makes protein.

Carries out the reactions of photosynthesis and contains the pigment chlorophyll.

The chloroplast carries out the reactions of photosynthesis.
