Chapter:7 Cell Structure

  1. What are 6 points on the mitochondrion?
    • It’s the site of respiration.
    • Very active cells (use a lot of energy) have lots of mitochondria.eg. muscle, nerve cells.
    • Inactive cells contain few mitochondria.
    • Each mitochondrion has its on loop of DNA.
    • The mitochondrion contains 2 membranes- an outer smooth membrane and a folded inner membrane.
    • The crest of each fold is called a crista.
  2. Where does respiration take place in the cell?
    In the mitochondrion
  3. What is respiration?
Respiration: the controlled release of energy from food.
  4. Very active cells have lots of what and why?
Very active cells have lots of mitochondria because they use a lot of energy. eg. muscle cells, nerve cells.
  5. What’s an example of a very active cell?
    Muscle cells, nerve cells.
  6. What type of cells have very few mitochondria?
    Inactive cells
  7. How many membranes does the mitochondrion have?
The mitochondrion has 2 membranes- an outer smooth membrane and a folded inner membrane.
  8. What are the 2 membranes of the mitochondrion?
    • An outer smooth membrane.
    • A folded inner membrane.
  9. What is the crest of each fold called?
The crest of each fold is called the crista.
  10. Each mitochondrion has its own what?
Each mitochondrion has its own loop of DNA.
  11. What is Cytosol?
Medium in which all metabolic reactions occur.
  12. What does the nucleolus make?
The nucleolus makes RNA and ribosomes.
  13. What does lysosome do?
Destroys old, worn out cell organelles.
  14. What is cytoplasm?
The living cell, including the cell membrane but excluding the nucleus (and large vacuole in plant cells).
  15. What does ribosome do?
    Makes protein.
  16. What is chloroplast?
Carries out the reactions of photosynthesis and contains the pigment chlorophyll.
  17. What carries out the reactions of photosynthesis in the plant cell?
The chloroplast carries out the reactions of photosynthesis.
  18. What contains the pigment chlorophyll?
    Chloroplast in plant cells.
