What is nutrition?
Nutrition: the way in which organisms obtain and use food.
Is water important and what happens with it in a plant?
Water is very important substance obtained and transported throughout the plant.
What is transpiration stream?
Transpiration stream: the movement of water through a plant.
What 3 maintain the transpiration stream?
Osmosis
Root pressure
Transpiration
Osmosis, root pressure and transpiration maintain what?
Transpiration stream is maintained by osmosis, root pressure and transpiration.
What is osmosis?
Osmosis: the movement of water from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration across a semi-permeable membrane.
What is root pressure?
The force exerted by water within the xylem tissue of the roots.
What is transpiration?
Transpiration: the loss of water from the aerial parts of a plant.
Write a note on water and mineral uptake? (5p)
Root hairs are adapted as they increase surface area to enhance absorption.
Water enters the root hairs by osmosis (give term).
Minerals dissolve easily in water and move into the root by diffusion- either by passive transport or by active transport (requires ATP).
Water moves across the ground tissue and into xylem tissue.
Water is then transported up the plant.
What is the adaption of root hairs to enhance its function?
Root hairs have increased surface area to enhance absorption.
How does root perform its function?
Root hairs have increased surface area to enhance absorption.
Water enters the root hairs by osmosis (give term).
Minerals dissolve easily in water and move into the root by diffusion- passive / active transport (requires ATP).
How are minerals absorbed/uptaken?
Minerals dissolve easily in water and move into the root by diffusion- passive / active transport (requires ATP).
What are the 2 ways minerals move by diffusion?
Diffusion by passive transport or active transport (requires ATP).
What requires ATP?
Active transport
Where does the water move to once in the roots?
Water moves across the ground tissue and into xylem tissue.
What transports water in the plant?
Xylem- a vascular tissue
