What does xylem do?
Xylem transports water and minerals up to the stem.
What does phloem do?
Phloem transports food to the roots.
What is the function of root hairs?
Root hairs are extensions of epidermis cells that increase surface area for absorption of water and mineral salts. (No cuticle)
What is the function of endodermis?
Controls movement of water and minerals from ground tissue into xylem.
What is a cotyledon?
Cotyledon: first leaf to appear in germination.
What are the differences between herbaceous dicot stems and herbaceous monocot stems?
Monocots have one cotyledon, is parallel and vascular bundles are scattered.
Dicots have 2 cotyledons, is netted and vascular bundles are in a ring.
What is a vascular bundle made up of?
Bundle sheath
Phloem
Xylem
Why is a leaf blade very thin?
To trap sun light and allow gaseous exchange.

What does sessile mean?
No leaf stalk

Lamina divided into a number of leaflets. eg. Horsechestnut
