Chapter 38-Excretory System

  1. What is excretion?
Excretion is the ridding of waste products of metabolism.
  2. How is excretion performed in plants?
    • Plants produce very little waste.
    • Some waste is stored.
    • More is lost- when dead structures fall off or waste gases are lost through their stomata and lenticels.
  3. Through which two structures do plants lose their waste gases?
Plants lose waste gases through their stomata and lenticels.
  4. What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment at optimal conditions for efficient metabolism in an organism.
  5. What are ectotherms?
Animals that obtain their heat from external sources.
  6. What are endotherms?
Animals that generate their heat from their own body reactions.
  7. What are examples of ectotherms and endotherms?
    • Ectotherms: fish, snakes, lizards
    • Endotherms: dogs, humans, elephants
  8. What are the 3 layers skin is composed of?
    • Epidermis
    • Dermis
    • Subcutaneous layer (adipose tissue)
  9. Give a (short) description of the outer layer of the epidermis?
Outer layer-(Cornified layer) dead, cornified and full of waterproof keratin.
  10. What is the inner layer of the epidermis called and what does it have?
Granular layer has living granular cells.
  11. What is the base of the granular layer and what does it do?
Malpighian layer makes new cells and contains many pigment (melanin) cells.
  12. Which layer of the epidermis contains pigment (melanin) cells?
    Malpighian layer
  13. What are the 3 layers of epidermis?
    • Cornified
    • Granular
    • Malpighian
  14. Which layer of the epidermis is full of waterproof keratin?
    Cornified layer
  15. What do cells of the dermis layer contain?
Cells in the dermis layer contain strong protein called collagen.
  16. What do you call the layer that contains fat in adipose tissue?
Subcutaneous layer contains fat in adipose tissue.
  17. What in the subcutaneous layer contains fat?
    Adipose tissue
  18. What does skin do to perform excretion?
Sweat- removes water and salts from body.
