What do white blood cells have that RBCs don’t?
White blood cells have a nucleus.
Is red blood cells or white blood cells larger?
White blood cells are usually larger than RBCs.
What do white blood cells not have that RBCs do?
White blood cells don’t contain haemoglobin.
Where are white cells formed?
WBCs are formed in the red bone marrow.
Where do WBCs mature?
White blood cells mature in the lymph system.
What are WBCs function?
WBCs function is protection against disease.
How do WBCs protect against disease?
WBCs recognise dangerous things and destroy them.
Produce proteins called antibodies in response to ‘foreign’ viruses and bacteria.
Which are more numerous, WBCs or RBCs?
WBCs are far less numerous than red blood cells.
Name two types of white blood cells?
1. Lymphocytes - 25% of WBCs
2. Monocytes ( phagocytes) - 5% of WBCs
What percentages of white blood cells are lymphocytes and monocytes?
Lymphocytes are 25% of white blood cells.
Monocytes are 5% of white blood cells.
Where does lymphocytes originate?
Lymphocytes originate in the bone marrow.
Where do most lymphocytes mature?
Most mature in the lymph system
(tonsils & lymph nodes).
What do lymphocytes produce?
Lymphocytes produce proteins called antibodies.
What is it lymphocytes respond to, to produce antibodies?
Lymphocytes produce antibodies in response to ‘foreign’ viruses and bacteria.
What is the largest type of white blood cell?
Monocytes are the largest type of WBCs.
Where is monocytes made in?
Monocytes are made in bone marrow.
What’s monocytes function?
Monocytes function is protection (-engulf bacteria and dead cells - macrophages 30%).
How does macrophages perform their function?
Macrophages (30%) engulf bacteria and dead cells.
What percentage are normal phagocytes?
Normal phagocytes are 70% (engulf bacteria).
What’s the difference between normal phagocytes and macrophages?
Macrophages engulf bacteria and dead cells (30%).
Normal phagocytes engulf bacteria (70%).
What is leukaemia?
Leukaemia is a form of cancer in which white blood cells are produced too rapidly and immature.
(They crowd out other blood cells)
What can leukaemia do?
Leukaemia may cause - anaemia,
-increased risk of infection
-reduced ability to clot blood.
What is the treatment for leukaemia?
Treatment is by drugs or radiation.
Give a summary on white blood cells? (Incl. 7 points)
White blood cells have a nucleus
Are usually larger than RBCs
Don’t contain haemoglobin
Formed in red bone marrow
Mature in lymph system
Protect against disease by recognising dangerous things in body and destroy them
Less numerous than RBCs.
Give summary of Lymphocytes? (Incl. 5 points)
Lymphocytes make up 25% of white blood cells
Originate in bone marrow
Most mature in lymph system (tonsils and lymph nodes)
Fairly large nucleus
Produce antibodies in response to ‘foreign’ viruses and bacteria and they destroy the foreign cells.
Give a summary on Monocytes? (Incl. 6 points)
Monocytes are phagocytes that make up 5% of white blood cells
Made in bone bone marrow
Largest type of white blood cell
Their function is protection by engulfing bacteria and dead cells- called macrophages
The other 70% are normal phagocytes (engulf bacteria).
