Other Defensive Plays

  1. What is the PLAY for

Catcher Back pick runner at 1B/3B
Once you hear that the play is on for the next pitch.

After the pitch the 1st / third baseman runs hard to their bag and the catcher fires down behind the runner.

We can run this play with runners on 1st and 2nd base- we will still throw down to first to get that runner out.
  2. What is the PLAY for

    Daylight Play
This is a play the SS calls not the coach.

If runner has lead big enough where the SS is closer to the bag than the runner - will stick out his glove as the pitcher.

If the pitcher sees the sign he will nod his yes.

Once the pitcher nods yes he will look home at the catcher.

Once he is looking at the, catcher the pitcher and the SS both count to “3 mississippi” in their heads.

On “2 mississippi” the SS breaks to 2B.

And on “3 mississippi” the pitcher does a quick replacement step pickoff move to 2B. (jumps turns glove side and throws ball to 2B)
  3. What is the play for

    Box Play
Once he gets back on the rubber the SS will be directly behind the runner at taking his lead.

    • As soon as the pitcher comes set the ss will pretend to break to 2B (take about 3-4 hard steps towards bag) then pull up and run towards the pitcher, then towards third and
    • back behind the runner completing the “box”.

    • At the same time the SS starts running towards the pitcher the second baseman will crash to 2B. Pitcher does quick pickoff
    • move
