Standard procedure for handling over / taking over wheel.
- 1. Ensure that handover / takeover is done under the supervision of the OOW.
- 2. Relieving helmsman to observe steering of previous helmsman for some time.

- 2. all cargo line drains should be closed and capped or plugged including diptrays.
- 3. access should be safe (angle and clean) and safety net should be rigged extending full lenght and beyond as posssible.
- 4. gangway should be provided with lifebuoy with light and line (not connected). when going across the gangway, ensure that ships personnel are wearing safety life vests.
- 5. is there a notice as per VIQ 5.23 posted at suitable location near the gangway.
- 6. security procedures are in place. duty ab should check id's and confirm name and photograph matches with the person and what he has written in the gangway register. personnel to be escorted to ccr or deck office. no shore personnel to be allowed to loiter inside the accommodation without escort.
- 7. fire hoses and extinguishers are ready for use
- 8. all use fire hydrants should be capped.
- 9. pilot ladder in good condition (rinsed with fresh water) squared up clear of deck
- 10 wilden pump needs to be tested constantly. rigged with grounding connection and fixed securely so that there is no movement while in operation.

- 12. emergency shower line is charge with clean water in the eye washes and showers.
