Anatomical Terminology

  1. Supine
    lying face up
  2. Prone
    lying face down
  3. Ventral
    at the front
  4. Dorsal
    at the back
  5. Cranial/Cephalic
    towards the head
  6. Caudal
    towards the tail
  7. Medial
near the midline of the body or structure
  8. Lateral
away from the midline of the body or structure
  9. Proximal
    near a reference point
  10. Distal
    away from reference point
  11. Median Plane
Divides body into equal left and right parts
  12. Midsagittal Plane
    aka Median Plane
  13. Sagittal Plane
Divides body into unequal left and right parts
  14. Frontal/Coronal Plane
Divides body into equal or unequal anterior and posterior parts
  15. Transverse Plane
Divides body into equal or unequal superior and inferior parts (cross sections)
  16. Movements occuring on Sagittal Plane
    flexion, extension
  17. Movements occuring on Frontal Plane
    abduction, adduction, lateral flexion/extension, elevation/depression
  18. Movements occuring on Transverse Plane
rotation, pronation, supination, retraction, protraction, inversion, eversion, horizontal flexion/extension
  19. Flexion
bending that decreases angle between two parts
  20. Extension
movement that increases angle between body parts
  21. Abduction
motion that pulls structure away from midline of body
  22. Adduction
motion that pulls structure toward midline of body
  23. Internal Rotation
aka medial rotation, turning limb toward midline of the body
  24. External Rotation
aka lateral rotation, turning limb away from center of body
  25. Circumduction
conical movement of body part, like the hip, shoulder, or eye
  26. Elevation
movement in superior direction (lifting shoulders up)
  27. Depression
movement in an inferior direction (dropping shoulders)
  28. Dorsiflexion of foot
toes brought closer to shin (upwards), decreases angle between dorsum of foot and leg
  29. Plantar Flexion
toes pressed down further away from shin/leg, decreases angle between sole of foot and back of leg
  30. Palmar Flexion
decreasing angle between palm and forearm, pushing hand down
  31. Dorsiflexion of hand
extension at the wrist, bring it up
  32. Pronation
forearm/palm turns inward, like pouring some tea
  33. Supination
forearm/palm turns outward, like holding bowl of soup
  34. Eversion of foot
movement of the sole of the foot away from median plane
  35. Inversion of foot
movement of sole towards the median plane
  36. Protraction
jutting jaw out, anterior motion along transverse plane
  37. Retraction
pulling jaw back, posterior motion along transverse plane
  38. Radial Deviation of hand
    moving towards midline
  39. Ulnar Deviation of hand
    moving away from midline
