  1. History
    • Events that occur during the course of the experiment, other than the manipulated independent variable, that occur during the course of the experiment and that may affect the outcome
    • An example would be historical events that had a major impact in the participant’s environment like a terrorist attack
  2. Maturation
    • Psychological or physical changes taking place within subjects that occur with the passing of time regardless of the experimental manipulation. 
    • Subjects may become hungry throughout participating in the study which can result in fatigue
  3. Attrition
    The loss of subjects
