Calculate gas duration problems
- LOX- Liquid Oxygen conversion factors
- Two very important conversion factors:
- 1 liter of liquid oxygen is equal to 2.5 pounds or 1.1 kg
- 1 liter of liquid oxygen is equal to 860 liters of gaseous ocygen
- Calculate gas duration problems
- Cylinder duration= (cylinder pressure x conversion factor)/(flow l/min)

Know all gas cylinder safety systems
DISS, PISS, ASSS
-
DISS: Diameter Index Safety System
- i. DISS is a threaded connection specific to the particular gas that is needed.
- ii. DISS was developed by the CGA for medical gases at 200psi or less.
- iii. DISS connection consists of a body, nipple and nut assembly
- 1. The body contains two specifically sized shoulders
- 2. Small bore (BB) mates with small shoulder (MM) and large bore (CC) mates with large shoulder (NN).
- iv. Each gas has its own corresponding size.
-
PISS: Pin Index Safety System
- i. Smaller cylinders (A-E) use this system
- ii. This system uses a specific combination of two holes on the post valve of the cylinder.
- iii. Any device that connects to the yoke of the cylinder will have pins that correspond to the holes on the post valve
- iv. This system uses a series of pins in six different locations
-
ASSS: American Standard Safety System:
- i. Used for large capacity cylinders (above 2000 psig), although typically it is seen more often iin the large cylinders such as H and K sizes.
- ii. This safety systems sets the specifications for threaded high pressure connections between compressed gas cylinders and their attachments, including the thread characteristics, (right or left handed, number of threads per inch, use of internal or external threads).
- iii. The diameter of the outlet and the shape of the mating nipple on the corresponding regulator are unique to each type of specialty gas.
- iv. The numbers used in this system help with identification process.
- 1. A cylinder containing oxygen will have a series of numbers to describe characteristics of the threaded outlet, specifically 0.903-12-RH-ext.
- a. 0.903: Describes the diameter of the cylinders outlet in inches
- b. 14: The number of threads per inch
- c. RH: Thread characteristics (right handed)
- d. Ext: External
