Energy
The capacity to move matter (do work) or transfer heat
Kinetic energy
The energy associated with an object by virtue of its motion
Potential energy
The energy an object has by virtue of its position in a field of force
Internal energy (U)
The sum of the kinetic and potential energies of the particles making up a substance
E

Law of conservation of energy
Energy may be converted from one form to another, but the total quantity of energy remains constant
Electrostatic potential energy (lattice energy)
The energy interaction between charged particles
Heat(q)
The energy that flows into or out of a system because of a difference in temperature between the system and its surroundings
Thermal equilibrium
Heat flow from a region of higher temperature to one of lower temperature; once the temperatures become equal the heat flow stops
Temperature
A value that is proportional to the average kinetic energy of the molecules
Heat of reaction
The value of q required to return a system to the given temperature at the completion of the reaction
