Thermochemistry

  1. Energy
The capacity to move matter (do work) or transfer heat
  2. Kinetic energy
    • The energy associated with an object by virtue of its motion
  3. Potential energy
    • The energy an object has by virtue of its position in a field of force
  4. Internal energy (U)
The sum of the kinetic and potential energies of the particles making up a substance

    Etot = EK + EP = U
  5. Law of conservation of energy
Energy may be converted from one form to another, but the total quantity of energy remains constant
  6. Electrostatic potential energy (lattice energy)
    • The energy interaction between charged particles
  7. Heat(q)
The energy that flows into or out of a system because of a difference in temperature between the system and its surroundings
  8. Thermal equilibrium
Heat flow from a region of higher temperature to one of lower temperature; once the temperatures become equal the heat flow stops
  9. Temperature
A value that is proportional to the average kinetic energy of the molecules
  10. Heat of reaction
The value of q required to return a system to the given temperature at the completion of the reaction
