Genetic testing
- different types women may choose to have
- screening tests or diagnostic tests
-
genetic screening tests
- CF and SMA
- these can also be done before pregnancy
- some screening tests can be done as early as 10 weeks
- screening only gives us a risk while diagnostic tests tell us for sure
- counsel women not to make any decisions based on screens alone, get a diagnostic test
-
Diagnostic tests
- diagnose the baby
- Amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling
-
cell-free dna
- fetal DNA in maternal serum
- allows them to test for a couple of problems (look for a y chromosome or for trisomy)
- you can know the sex as early as 10-11 weeks thanks to this
- a screen- it could mean theres a problem with the baby if its abnormal, but diagnostic should be done to confirm
- abnormalities here can increase risk of preeclampsia or maternal cancer
