Early Pregnancy Complications

  1. Genetic testing
    • different types women may choose to have
    • screening tests or diagnostic tests
  2. genetic screening tests
    • CF and SMA
    • these can also be done before pregnancy
    • some screening tests can be done as early as 10 weeks
    • screening only gives us a risk while diagnostic tests tell us for sure
    • counsel women not to make any decisions based on screens alone, get a diagnostic test
  3. Diagnostic tests
    • diagnose the baby
    • Amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling
  4. cell-free dna
    • fetal DNA in maternal serum
    • allows them to test for a couple of problems (look for a y chromosome or for trisomy)
    • you can know the sex as early as 10-11 weeks thanks to this
    • a screen- it could mean theres a problem with the baby if its abnormal, but diagnostic should be done to confirm
    • abnormalities here can increase risk of preeclampsia or maternal cancer
