Pull in Production

  1. Product mix is
is a management strategy of an organization
  2. Product classification categories:
    • 1. product mix
    • 2. process pattern
    • 3. production system
  3. Takt time definition
the amount of time required at a certain production unit before the material or information is moved onto the next production unit
  4. Benefits of continuous flow:
  5. Make ready plan definition
    remove constraints from assignments
  6. WIP performance:
  7. Supermarket
  8. Limitations with a Pull strategy
    • limitations within supply chain
    • fragmentation within constr. industry
    • long lead time for some items
    • price fluctuations
  9. Build-out according to tenants
  10. Shared work as a trigger
  11. Pull strategies in construction:
    • using a supermarket
    • shared work as a trigger
    • build-out according to requests
  12. Little's Law
    • WIP = cycle time x throughput
  13. What are the types of product mix?
One of a kind or few: unique products; construction falls into this category for no 2 projects are alike. Bc each product is like a prototype, challenges are competitive bidding, timely delivery, and product design

    • Low volumes of many products:high variety of products; electronics  challenges QC
    • High volume of several major products : automobile industry
    • Very high volume, standard product: mass production petrochemical, consumer goods competition solely on price
  14. Process patterns are:
  15. What is the process pattern?
It is a set of activities, actions or tasks needed to produce a product or provide service
  16. Types of production systems are...
    • batch and queue
    • continuous flow
  17. Batch and queue:
each production stage produces more than one unit. They are effective at coping with variation bc they create buffers between the production functions, but they don't address the source of variation
  18. The downside of Push production system
    • Work is released based on a preset schedule;
    • creates excess WIP (inventory).
    • It creates a problem of WWFW
    • no consideration for other trades
    • Examples: delivery of material regardless of site space constraints installing drywall based on a master schedule, but with limited or no coordination with PME trades
  19. Continuous flow definition aka single piece flow
Not having unfinished WIP ...a product (unit) undergoes each stage of production sequentially one at a time - JIT
  20. Batch and queue: hidden inefficiencies:
  21. Kanban means
"signboard" a signal in JIT systems so downstream workers can let upstream know to release work or materials.
  22. What is the effect of smaller batches on the production system?
More units were completed within a given time.
  23. Name 3 process patterns:
    • Very jumbled/jumbled: very little to no flow and no linking between segments
    • Line flow - worker or machine paced
    • continuous and automated rigid flow - close to fully automated assembly lines
