Variation in Production System

  1. Variation
(undesired) Deviation or fluctuation in the process (or from the process mean) resulting from inputs and actions; it has a corrupting effect on the workflow.  it is important to identify sources of variation and eliminate them in order to have a consistent workflow on the job.
  2. Causes of variation:
    • a) common cause (internal): individual crew member performance, safe work practices, experience, etc.
    • b) special cause (external): weather, equipment breakdown, delivery interruptions, design changes/errors.
  3. WIP definition
The amount of work in production at a given time.
  4. Throughput definition:
The amount of output (finished product) in a given amount of time (the real measure of speed in the system).
  5. Cycle time definition:
The time that it takes for material/product to cycle through the production system: from the time it enters to the time it leaves the production system.
  6. Capacity
...the maximum amount of work a production unit can accomplish with the provided tools and methods. Ultimately, there would be a 100% capacity.

  9. Buffer is
A mechanism to reduce the impact of variation on a construction operation. They only mitigate, not erase the cause for variation. There are 3 kinds of buffers: inventory, capacity & schedule.
  10. Workflow is
a progression of work within a trade or from one trade to another. Reducing workflow variation makes project outcomes more predictable.
  11. In order to start any work activity, we need 3 types of inputs:
    • Directive
    • Prerequisite work
    • Resources
  12. Variability definition
is the ability to deviate/adjust creatively & productively due to variation
  13. Material buffer means
    Stocking of critical material.
  14. What are resources?
Labor, equipment, material, and tools required to complete a certain activity.
  15. Schedule buffer definition:
Activities/work not on a critical path that can help combat schedule variation. Fill-in activities in case of lack of work.
  16. Capacity buffer means
maintain extra crew on hand in case workflow demands it.
  17. Throughput
The amount of output (finished product) in a given amount of time (the real measure of speed in the system).
  18. Directives are
set of instructions required to start the activity
  19. Lowering the river

  20. Execution failure definition
Any failure that stops a crew from completing their activity by the scheduled time
  21. Lowering the river is a metaphor for...
...reducing the buffers in order to expose problems (rocks in the river).
  22. What is Lean (definition)?
Set of ideas, practiced by individuals in the const industry, based on the pursuit of CImprovement aimed at minimizing cost and max value to stakeholders.
  23. TFV theory
Lauri Koskela 1992 States that CM involves the transformation of input into output, a flow of material/information, and management of the value important to customers
