Organic Chemistry Primer

  1. What are the four premises for studying organic chemistry?
    • 1. Fundamental concepts
    • 2. Mathematical predictions
    • 3. Paradigms are working models
    • 4. Creation of art is the purpose of life
  2. What are the components of the fundamental concepts?
    • 1. Inductive effect
    • 2. Resonance effect
    • 3. Change in hybridization
    • 4. Influence of neighboring groups
  3. What is the inductive effect?
If two different atoms are covalently bonded then the atom with the greater electronegativity will carry a partial positive charge and the less electronegative atom will carry a partial negative charge. As the inductive effect pull electrons away from an atom it causes hydrogen atoms to behave as lewis acids and it shifts peaks downfield in NMR spectroscopy.
