  1. What is Centre of Bouyancy?
CB is point that the forces created by the hull act through
  2. What causes changes in Centre of Bouyancy?
    • Heeling
    • Load
    • Trim
  3. What is Centre of Gravity?
CG is point that the forces created by the weight of the vessel act through
  4. What governs the Centre of Gravity?
    • The vessels structure and weight distribution.
    • The lower the CG the better
  5. What is the Righting Leaver?
Righting Leaver (GZ) is created by CB and CG.
  6. What is Righting Moment?
RM is GZ times the weight.
  7. At what angle is RM at maximum?
    60°
  8. What is Angle of Vanishing Stability?
    • The angle of heel where the boat will capsize and be stable but inverted.
    • The higher the AVS the better
  9. What factors affect Angle of Vanishing Stability?
Hull shape, flatter and beamier the worst
  10. How can Angle of Vanishing Stability be improved?
    Lowering CG.
  11. What can cause capsize?
    • Flooding/Free surface effect - Check bliges
    • Large breaking waves > vessel beam - Don't be caught beam on.
    • Resonant rolling and breaching - Laser running effect
    • High CG
  12. What can prevent capsize?
    • Know capability/RCD category of boat
    • Check bilges regularly
    • Lower CG
    • Close hatches
    • Avoid being caught beam on
    • Watch for strong gusts
  13. What are the RCD categories?
