  1. State the big ideas for digestion.
Digestion is a north to south process. Big organs: stomach, pancreas, gallbladder. Digestion is fundamental to nutritional therapy.  Every cell needs nutrition. Digestion begins in the brain.
  2. Describe the way digestion is supposed to work.
    • 1) Brain: triggers salivary glands at sight/smell of food. Parasympathetic state
    • 2) Mouth: Mechanical (chewing) Chemical (salivary enzyme, salivary amylase breaks down carbs)
    • 3) Swallow: Bolus goes down esophagus through cardiac sphincter to stomach
    • 4) Stomach: churns food mixing it with HCl and pepsin to form chyme
    • 5) Chyme releases into small intestine via pyloric sphincter into duodenum. pH of chyme is 1.3 so bicarb is released to change it to pH of 7.
    • 6) Liver, gallbladder and pancreas release bile mixes with chyme and moves to small intestine.
    • 7) Small intestine: secretin and CCK, bile emulsifies fat
    • 8) Large intestine: Sorts out water and vitamins for recycling then sends the rest on to colon and out
  3. Explain at least three things than can go wrong in the digestive system.
    • 1) A person could not be in a parasympathetic state: stress, not chewing food enough.
    • 2) Stomach acid could be low
    • 3) The pH of the chyme entering duodenum may not be right so pancreatic juice won't be released.
    • 4) Low or bad fats don't stimulate the gallbladder to release bile, so fats go undigested.
  4. Define the three possible reactions a client can have to a nutritional protocol.
    • 1) Digestive reaction: Diarrhea, constipation, cramping, heartburn.
    • 2)Sensitivity or allergic reaction:Rash, congestion, the allergy symptoms
    • 3)Healing reaction: looks like what you are trying to fix. IE: flu like symptoms (detox), nausea when working on gallbladder.
  5. Summarize the five step process for Coca's Pulse Test.
    • 1) Relax
    • 2) Take pulse for one minute
    • 3) Put food in mouth, hold for 30 seconds.
    • 4) Retake pulse, with food still the mouth.
    • 5) Do not swallow the food, spit it out
    • 6) Repeat test with other foods or meds/supplements as needed.
