Flight Phisiology

  1. Boyle's Law
"Boyle's = Balloon = Trauma" Or (boil - gas bubling)

The pressure of gas is inversely proportional to the volume of a gas at a constant temperature.
  2. Charle's Law
    "Charle's Centigrade"

At a constant pressure, the volume of gas is directly proportional to the absolute temperature of the gas.
  3. Dalton's Law
    "Dalton's Gang"

Law of partial Pressures. Total pressure of a gas mixture is the sum if the partial pressures of all the gases in the mixture.

    (Soft tissue swelling at altitude)
  4. Fick's Law
Diffusion of gas is proportional to the difference in partial pressure and proportional to the area of the membrane.
  5. Henry's Law
    "Henry = Heineken"

Solubility of gas in liquid. The quanity of gas dissolved in 1cm^3 (1ml) of a liquid is proportional to the partial pressure of the gas in contact with the liquid.

Divers decompression sickness - (Every 33ft is 1 ATM)
  6. Guy-Lussac's Law
Directly Proportional Relationship between temperature and pressure

    Lower pressure in colder temps.
  7. Universal Gas Law
    (Ideal Gas Law)
    • Relates thermodynamics of temperature and barometric pressure in relation to altitude changes
    • -Boyle's
    • -Charles
    • -Guy-Lussac's
  8. Graham's Law
    "Graham's = Grape Jelly"

    • Law of gaseous diffusion.
    • The rate of diffusion of a gas through a liquid medium us directly related to the solubility of the gas and inversely proportional to the square root of it's density

Limits gas ability to move through liquid.(CHF or mucus)
  9. Barodontaglia
Pain in teeth from trapped air (ascent)

    "aerodontaglia"
  10. Barotitis
Pain in ear/ head from trapped air in the middle ear. (Descent)
  11. Barosinusitis
Epistaxis after rupture of sinus membranes (ascent AND descent)
  12. The Bends
    Hery's Law

Rapid decrease in pressure, nitrogen diffuses

    • Type I
    • Joint and skin pain and itching, mottled

    • Type II
    • Neuro signs and symptoms (rapid ascending paralysis)
    • Coughing up blood.
    • Use ground transport
  13. Barobariotrauma
Sudden release of nitrogen stores in lipids when going to altitude.

    • Common is obese, pregnant, peds.
    • Give high flow O2 for nitrogen washout
