Freud's 5 Psychosexual Stages of Development

  1. Oral Stage
    • Birth to 1 year 
    • Erogenous Zone: mouth
    • Mouth vial for eating. Infant derives pleasure from oral stimulation through gratifying activities such as tasking and sucking.Develops a sense of trust and comfort  
    • Primary conflict: Weaning process - becomes less depend on caregiver. If fixation occurs a this state, individual will issues have dependency or aggression
  2. Anal Stage
    • Age: 1 to 3 Years 
    • Erogenous Zone: Bowel and Bladder control.
    • Primary focus of the libido (sex drive) was on controlling bladder and bowel movement. 
    • Primary Conflict: Toilet training - child learns to control bodily needs to develop a sense of accomplishment and independence. 
    • Experiences serves the bases for people to become competent, productive and creative adults. Too much pressure can result in an excessive need for order or cleanliness later in life, while too little pressure from parents can lead to messy or destructive behavior latter in life 
  3. Phallic Stage
    • Age: 3 to 6 years
    • Erogenous Zone: Genitals
    • Gender identify - Children begin to discover the difference between males and females. Boy begins to view father a rival for his mother's affections. The Oedipus complex - feelings of wanting to possess the mother and desire to replace the father. Boy also fears he will be punished by father for those desires - castration anxiety
    • Electra complex - used to described a similar set of feelings experienced by young girls and girls experience penis envy (Which they never get over).
    • Psychs disagree (K. Horney) Counters that is inaccurate and insulting to woman and that men experience womb envy b/c they can't have children.
  4. Latent Stage
    • Age: 6 - Puberty 
    • Libido interest are suppressed/sexual feels dormant. Develop of ego and superego contribute to this period of calm. Children develop self confidence, social skills, values and relationships with peers and adults outside of the family 
  5. Genital Stages
    • Age: Puberty to Death 
    • Individual develops a strong sexual interest in the opposite sex. Interest in the welfare of others grow during this stage. if successful in all other stages, individual should be well-balanced warm and care. Goal - to establish a balance tween in the various life areas.
  6. Id
    • Only component of personality present at birth entirely unconscious and includes instinctive and primitive behaviors.
    • Source of all psychic energy; the primary component of personality
    • Driven by the pleasure principle; strives for immediate gratification of all desires, wants and needs.
    • if needs are not satisfied immediately result in a state of anxiety or tension.
  7. Ego
    • Component of personality responsible for dealing with reality (realistic) 
    • ego is developed from the Id and ensures that the impulses of the Id can be expressed in a (socially appropriate) manner acceptable in the real world
    • Ego functions in the conscious, preconscious, and unconscious mind 
    • Weighs the cost and benefit before deciding to act upon or abandon impulses
  8. Super Ego
    • Aspect of personality that hold all our internalized moral standards and ideals from our parents and society - our sense of right and wrong 
    • provide guidelines for making judgments
    • It begins to emerge at around 5
    • Perfect and civilize our behavior 
    • works to suppress all unacceptable urges from the Id and struggles to make the ego act upon idealistic standards rather then a realistic principle 
    • It is present in the conscious, preconscious and unconscious
