Vascular Distensibility & Function

  1. What is compliance?
    The distensibility of the vessel
  2. How does compliance affect volume and pressure of a vessel?
    • High compliance: change in volume produces a small change in pressure
    • Low compliance: change in volume produces a large change in pressure
  3. How does blood pressure change with age? Which blood pressure changes the most?
    • Blood pressure increases because arteries become less compliant
    • Systolic increases the most
  4. How does arteriosclerosis change blood pressure?
Increases systolic BP because reduces compliance
  5. How does aortic stenosis change blood pressure?
Decreases systolic BP, may stay normal
  6. How does a patent ductus arteriosus change blood pressure?
Decreases diastolic BP and increases systolic BP
  7. How does aortic regurgitation change blood pressure?
Decreases diastolic BP and increases systolic BP
