    Astigmatism
  88. A chart for the detection of this condition consists of a series of parallel lines arranged like the spokes of a wheel. If the refracting surfaces are not distorted, all of the spokes will be seen with equal distinctness and none of them will appear darker than others. If astigmatism is present, the horizontal spokes may be properly focused and seen, while the vertical spokes are focused either in front of or behind the retina.
