  1. pleomorphic adenoma
    • benign tumor composed of stromal and epithelial tissue
    • usually arise in the parotid ; painless mobile
    • high rate of recurrence if the tumor capsule if not excised properly
    • rarely transforms to carcinomawith signs of facial nerve damage
  2. mumps
    • infection with mumps virus result in inflamed bilateral parotid
    • serum amylase is increased due to salivary and pancreatic involvement
    • orchitis carries risk of sterility especially in teenagers
  3. sialadenitis
    • inflammation of salivary gland
    • most commonly due to obstruting stone leading to staphylococcus aureus infection, usually unilateral
