- usually arise in the parotid ; painless mobile
- high rate of recurrence if the tumor capsule if not excised properly
- rarely transforms to carcinomawith signs of facial nerve damage

- infection with mumps virus result in inflamed bilateral parotid
- serum amylase is increased due to salivary and pancreatic involvement
- orchitis carries risk of sterility especially in teenagers

- inflammation of salivary gland
- most commonly due to obstruting stone leading to staphylococcus aureus infection, usually unilateral
