Unit 2: The Cell

  1. Cell membrane
    • Made up of phospholipids and proteins
    • Phosphate group- love water
    • Lipid group hate water
    • Proteins attached to bilayer
    • Located in cell wall

    • Functions:
    • Retains cell content
    • Controls what enters and leaves (selectively permeable)
  2. Mitochondria
    • Supply energy to cell (ATP)
    • Site for respiration (aerobic/anaerobic)
    • Get from only mother

    • Inactive:
    • Very few infolding and low amount of energy released

    • Active:
    • More infoldings, more energy produced
    • exercixe causes foldings to increase

Found in muscle and liver, not many in fat tissue
  3. Nucleus
    • Control centre of cell
    • Double membrane w many nuclear pores, allow certain molecules to enter and exit
    • Contains DNA
  4. Nucleolus
    • Ribosomes made here
    • Part of nucleus that stains darkly
  5. Cytoplasm
    Jelly like substance surrounding nucleus
  6. Vacuole
Contains cell sap- fluid containing salts amd sugars
  7. Chloroplasts
    • Green structure where photosynthesis takes place
    • Contains chlorophyll
  8. Ribosomes
    • Consist of protein and RNA
    • Makes proteins and combine amino acids to form different proteins
  9. Cell walls
    • Made of cellulose
    • Support and strengthen the cell
    • Fully permeable
  10. Prokaryotic cell
No nucleus or membrane enclosed organelles
  11. Eukaryotic cells
Have nucleus and membrane enclosed organelles
