CDS 602 Lecture 1

  1. Evaluation
process of arriving at a diagnosis

done throughout clinical process to determine how effective treatments are

    • observe and measure phenomena to compare to something similar (peer, specific person) or standard (how 50 yr old men from area speak)
    • includes trial therapy
    • quantifiable descriptive data
    • formal probes

    **results of specific tests

    **comes before assessment
  2. Assessment
measures the effectiveness of specific skills  to improve

objectively observe/measure to understand the condition of something

    • results of specific tests are synthesized and we figure out what the test means
    • note skills or lack thereof

    **interpreting raw data

**what is reported to the family

**done throughout the clinical process to document progress, stagnation, regression
  3. Diagnosis
    • ID/determine nature of disease through examination
    • result of evaluation
  4. 2 Questions that Sum Up Diagnosis
    • Is there a problem?
    • If so, what?
  5. Differential Diagnosis
    • distinguish between conditions with similar signs
    • probability of one disease

ex)determining whether its allergies or a cold

    **essential to intervention and treatment

**be familiar with disorders and symptoms
  6. 3 Reasons to Engage in Diagnostic Process
    • Determine reality of a problem
    • Determine etiology of a problem
    • Provide clinical focus
  7. Communication Difference
    • extent to which patterns draw attention when it occurs
    • may not be a disorder, depends on the context of differences
  8. Handicapping Effect
impact on client's current abilities or potential growth because of communication difference
  9. Communication Disturbance
extent to which difference impacts message transmission
  10. 3 Types of Etiological Factors
    • Predisposing
    • Precipitating
    • Perpetuating
  11. Predisposing
    render susceptible to developing problem

ex) jazz singer/teach/cheer coach/choir director predisposed to voice disorder because of abuse
  12. Precipitating
    Cause/trigger onset of disorder

ex) singer gets gig at Atretha homegoing

    **abuse during performance triggered disorder
  13. Perpetuating
    make a condition endure/advance

ex) Dr. prescribes vocal rest and patient doesn't listen
  14. Questions to Provide Clinical Focus
    What do I know about...

    • the problem? (review referral/failed screening)
    • this person (case history)
    • my skills in treating disorder and/or person (native lang, age, etc.)
    • services of other professional for this client (am I qualified, who can help me do the best?)

What factors need to be changed/removed to improve prognosis
  15. Prognosis
    the probability of improvement
  16. Diagnostic Process
    • 1. Receive complaint
    • 2. Perform History Examination
    • 3. Synthesize and Analyze Data
    • 4. Determine Diagnosis/Differential Diagnosis
    • 5. Make Clinical Decisions (is treatment appropriate?)

*be able to compare diagnostic process to scientific method

**be able to compare diagnostics process to scientific method
