When the curve shifts to the right is more or less O2 released?
More O2 is released for any given drop in pressure
When the curve shifts to the left is more or less O2 released?
Less O2 will be released at any given drop in pressure
RBC Membrane is made up of what?
60% phospholipid
30% cholesterol
10% glycolipid
Integral proteins also included are:
band 3 glycoprotein
sialoglycoproteins
Rh (D) protein
RBC Peripheral proteins are membrane are:
Spectrin
Actin
Ankyrin
Bohr Effect
Describes the relationship between hydrogen ions and oxygen affinity:
An increase in H+ (low pH) shifts curve to right
A decrease in H+ (high pH) shifts curve to the left
CO2 Effect
CO2 effects Hgb O2 affinity independent of its effect through pH.
See slide 12? physiology, composition, & function
Chloride Effect
Inorganic ions such as Cl interact with certain positively charged sites on the Hgb molecule and alter O2 affinity.
Chloride decreases = O2 affinity & Bohr effect increase
2,3 DPG Effect( an enzyme on the RBC)
Strong affinity fro reduced Hgb, which causes Hgb to release O2 to the tissues and binding to reduced Hb
This molecule is present in equal concentrations with Hgb.
Temperature Effect
Increased body temp = Shift to the right = release of O2 to tissue
Decreased body temp = Shift to the left = Less O2 released to tissue
