Systemic effects of inhalational agent : Respiratory system

  1. ventillation
    • initially, Vt decreases and f increases,
    • later Vt and f both decreases
    • Ventillatory responses also inhibited
  2. Bronchial muscles
    • all agent cause bronchodilation
    • by, direct effect on muscles and by action on Central pathway
  3. Effect on hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction(HPV)
all agents are pulmonary vasodilators except n2o, blunt HPV sesponse , V/Q ratio mismatch worsen
  4. Effect on ciliary activity
    • all reduces ciliary activity except ether
    • reduces capability to cough out secretion postop
