Mass
Amount of matter in an object
Volume
Amount of space an object takes up
Density
Amount of mass in a certain volume
Floatation
A substance floats on a liquid if it is less dense than the liquid
Speed
Distance it travels in a certain amount if time
Velocity
Speed of an object in a certain direction
Acceleration
Change in it's speed divided by the time taken for this change in speed
Force
Causes an object to move
Friction
The force that opposes the motion of an object when in contact with another object
Lubrication
Reduces the friction between two objects in contact
Hooke's law
The extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force causing the extension
Moment of force
Force applied multiply by the distance from the fulcrum
Lever
A rigid body that turns around a fixed point called the fulcrum
Centre of gravity
The point in the object at which all the weight seems to act on
Stable equilibrium
The object will always return to it's same position
Unstable equilibrium
The object will not return to it's same position
Pressure
The amount of force acting down on a fixed area
Watt
The unit of power
represents joules per second
Work done
force×distance
When a force causes and object to move
Power
The rate at which work is done
workdone/time
Energy
The ability to do work
Principle of conservation of energy
Energy is neither created or destroyed but is converted from one form into another
Latent heat
Occurs when there is a change in state but not in temperature
Radiation
Transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves and does not require a medium
Luminous
Objects that make their own light
Non-luminous
Don't make their own light
light reflects of non-luminous sources
Dispersion
Separation of light into it's different colours
Spectrum
Of a white light is the 7 colours as it passes from one medium into another
Sound
Produced by vibrations
Echo
reflection of sound
Magnetic force
The force of attraction of repulsion between two magnets
A magnetic field
The area around a magnet in which a magnetic force is present
Insulator
A material that does not allow charge to flow through it
Conductor
A material that allows charge to flow through it
Direct Current
flows in only one direction
Alternating Current
Changes direction continuously
A fuse
Used to limit the size of a current flowing through a circuit
A diode
Allows electric current to flow in only one direction
Light Emitting diode (Led)
Gives out light when current passes through it
It only allows current to flow through it in one direction
Light dependant resistor (LDR)
Allows the resistance to change depending on the light intensity falling on it.
