Science - A Sustainable World

  1. Explain deforestation
This is when large areas of forest are destroyed to make way for non-forest use such as farmland, housing and roads
  2. Explain extinction
This is when no more individuals of a certain species are alive anywhere in the world
  3. Explain conservation
This is the protection and careful management of the Earth's natural resources to prevent living things from becoming extinct
  4. Explain pollution
This happens when harmful substances are added to the environment
  5. What is acid rain?
This is the burning of fossil fuels in cars which releases nitrogen oxides into the air

These gases dissolve in the air's moisture to form sulfuric acid and nitric acid

This falls back to Earth as acid rain
  6. List the effects of acid rain
It washes minerals out of soil and into lakes which kills fish

    It damages buildings and statues

It harms leaves which means trees and plants cannot photosynthesise
  7. How could a person reduce the effects of acid rain?
Use renewable energy such as wind

Install catalysts in cars to remove the harmful nitrogen oxides from exhaust fumes

    Plant more trees
  8. Explain what is meant by sustainability
This is living in a way that meets the needs of our society without threatening the needs of future societies
  9. What is incineration?
This is the burning of waste which releases poisonous gases into the air
  10. Explain waste managament
This involves reducing, reusing and recycling waste
