Explain the Law of Conservation of Mass
This states that the total mass of reactants in a chemical reaction always equals the total mass of the products
What is ionic bonding?
This is a force of attraction between oppositely charged ions
It occurs when one atom loses electrons and another atom gains these electrons
If an atom gains an electron the ion is negative
If an atom loses an electron the ion is positive
If an atom gains an electron does the ion become positive or negative?
Negative
If an atom loses an electron does the ion become positive or negative?
Positive
What is covalent bonding?
This is formed when pairs of electrons are shared between two atoms
List the properties of ionic substances
Usually solids
Have high melting and boiling points
Conduct electricity
List the properties of covalent substances
Usually liquid or gases
Have low melting and boiling points
Do not conduct electricity
