  1. What are chromosomes?
These are thread like structures found in the nucleus of a cell
  2. What are chromosomes made up of?
They are made up of protein and a chemical called DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)
  3. How many chromosomes are in each human body cell?
    46 chromosomes
  4. How many chromosomes are in sperm and the egg?
    Sperm contains 23 chromosomes

    An egg contains 23 chromosomes
  5. What are genes?
This is a short section of the DNA in a chromosome
  6. What are species?
This is a group of similar organisms that can breed with each other to produce fertile offspring
  7. What is a variation?
This describes all of the differences in traits that exist in members of the same species eg. eye colour
  8. What is natural selection?
This is the process whereby organisms that are better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring
  9. What is evolution?
This is the gradual change in the inherited characteristics of a species over time
  10. What is selective breeding?
This is changing plants and animals through careful breeding to improve their useful characteristics eg. cows are bred to produce large volumes of milk and beef
  11. What is meant by mutation?
This is a change in a gene or chromosome
  12. What is biotechnology?
This is the use of living things to make useful products eg. micro-organisms to make food such as cheese and bread
  13. What is genetic engineering?
This is deliberately changing genes to produce desirable characteristics eg. medicine for diabetes
  14. What is cloning?
These are genetically identical individuals eg. Dolly the sheep
