Pericardial Effusion
- the escape of blood or other fluid into the pericardium.
- 1. Pericarditis
- 2. Congestive heart failure
Pericarditis & Congestive cardiac failure
- 1. Inflammation of pericardium -> fluid accummuate in pericardial cavity -> severe chest pain
- 2. Inability to maintain blood circulation. The heart has lost the ability to pump enough blood to the body's tissues.
- With too little blood being delivered, the organs and other tissues do not receive enough oxygen and nutrients to function properly.
Cardiac Tamponade
- Blood in the pericardial cavity
- Cause: Stab wound; Myocardial infarction (rupture of heart muscle)
- Treatment: pericardio-centesis (remove fluid using needle)
Beck's Traid
- Three medical signs: associated with acute cardiac tamponade, fluid
- accumulates around the heart and impairs its ability to pump blood.
- Result is Triad:
- Low blood pressure (heart can't pump out enough blood to body)
- Muffled cardiac sound (quiet sound of heart)
- Distended neck vein or increased central venous pressure (back-up of blood in vein because blood stuck in the heart)
