One of the first computer scientist who created the turning machine.
- He replaces the question: "Can machines think (or are they intelligent) with a different question.
- His question: "can a machine trick someone into thinking that they are human?"
What is the imitation game?
Turing's version that used gender. (goal is to figure out how good the person is at guessing who the actual female is)
- Tricked people into thinking that they were the opposite sex.
- The interrogator is trying to figure out who is the actual female. During this game, you have a male acting like a female and an actual female acting like a female.
- Then the male is replaced with a computer that acts like a female.
- If you replace the human with a computer then you can deem/prove its intelligence
What was Turing’s conjecture?
He believed that in about 50 years we'd be able to programme computers, they'd have more storage capacity, would play/pass the imitation game
What is a Turing Test?
- A test for the presence of mind or intelligence
ex: blade runner - uses a test that focuses on an artificial bodies mind to see how they answer certain questions to determine if they're human or not
- would ask questions that would evoke emotions that would not be present in a computer
What three features does Turing say a digital computer has? Explain what those features are.
1. Store (store of information/memory)
2. Executive unit (Carries out the computations or operations)
3. Control (makes sure that rules are followed)
Identify and explain one of the objections to Turing’s conjecture.
