Unit two set 3

  1. What is the difference between diachronic identity and synchronic identity?
    • synchronic- The question of what makes you, you right now (same time).
    • - you are you right now because your soul is a substance that is the same

diachronic - The question of what makes you, you overtime. You are you overtime if there is no psychological interruptions
  2. What is the functionalist theory of mind?
    • The basic idea of what we should understand the mind and its mental states in terms of function rather than what they are made up.
    • example:
    • breaks on a plane and breaks on a car are two different things/parts but function the exact same way
  3. Difference between functionalism, Cartesian dualism, and the identity theory.
    • Functionalism - defines mental states in terms of what they do rather than what they are made of
    • Cartesian dualism is how the mind and the body interact. The mind is an immaterial substance and the body is a material thing. They both interact both ways.
    • Identity theory- This explains the correlation between the mind and the brain. The theory states that mental states are identical to brain states. Mind is = to the brain.
  4. How does functionalism of the mind avoid the problem of multiple realizability?
it challenges the identity theorist to identify a type of brain state that explains why all tokens of pain are identical to it. Due to the various types of brains it seems like it will be very difficult to say what type that it is
  5. How does the chines nation thought experiment challenge functionalism?
    • If we have the nation of China simulate a brain in term of all the same functions that the brain normally performs and connect it to an artificial body such that the brain-body system does all of the things that our brain-body system usually do, would
    • that system be conscious?
  6. What is the Chinese thought experiment?
When the nation of China is converted to simulate an external brain. The people are given radios to connect them to other people and to an artificial body. (The people are doing all of the same function of a brain by sending signals to others and the artificial body )
  7. What is the Chinese thought experiment
