FLSA recognizes trading of time will be deemed to have no effect on hours of work if the following criteria are met
- 1. Trade time must be completely voluntary by employee
- 2. Reason for trade must be attributable to employee's desire to attend to personal matters
- 3. A record must be maintained by the employer of all trade times

When is trading prohibited
mandatory drill, recertification class or testing process

When a member of company officer becomes aware that a trade time has been scheduled in the Journal System for the day of an event requiring mandatory participation-
Notify company officer or battalion chief

Who can grant approval for trade time on mandatory participation
Deputy chief for unusual circumstances.

How long can trade times last
four consecutive shifts

Exception for four consecutive shifts are for the following
- Attending class to acquire credit, in subjects beneficial to their fire service career.
- For special or emergency reasons
These two may be granted by the members's battalion chief

Emergency Operations Division Chief or Chief of the Fire Bureau

Trade time obligations shall be payable on

1. Regularly assigned members
2. Kelly relief officers,firefighters and paramedics

Can recruits make a trade time?
- Yes, granted by their company officer for emergency situations,
- Granting of trade times for emergency situations shall be referred to the suppression battalion chief
