Science Test Module 8

  1. Define "Index fossils"
Fossils that are assumed to represent a certain time period in earth's past
  2. Define "geological column"
A theoretical picture in which layers of rock from around the world are meshed together in a single, unbroken record of earth's past
  3. Define " The Theory of Evolution"
A theory stating that all life on this earth has one (or a few) common ancestor(s)that existeda long time ago
  4. How are index fossils used by uniformitarian
    geologists?
To determine what time period a layer of rock represents
  5. Explain, in your own words, how the geological column is constructed.
The geological column is constructed by taking the different layers of rock from around the world that each represent a different time period in earth's past and lining them all up together
  6. Is it possible to go somewhere in the world and all major layers of the geological column and it's fossils in one geological formation?
    No it is not possible
  7. Image Upload 2
According to the uniformitarian view, which creatures lived on earth first: trilobites or fish?
    Trilobites
  8. Image Upload 4
If a paleontologist finds only fossil algae in layer of rock, roughly how old does the paleontologist think the rocks are?
    570 million years old
  9. Image Upload 6
A geological formation with only two layers of rock is studied. One has fossils of mammals only, the other has fossils of fish only. According to uniformitarian geologists assumptions, which layer should be on the bottom and which should be on the the top?
The layer with fish fossils on the bottom and the layer of mammal fossils on the top.
  10. Why is the geological column considered evidence for evolution?
It's considered evidence for evolution because it indicates that early in earth's history, there were only simple life forms. As time went on, the geological column indicates that more and more complex life forms started to appear.
  11. Why is the geological column not really evidence for evolution?
Because it is not real. Since it is constructed with assumptions, the evidence is only good if the assumptions are valid.
  12. What do the data from Mount Saint Helens tell us about the time it takes to form stratified rock?
That stratified rock can form rapidly
  13. if you see a canyon with a river flowing at the bottom of it, should you assume that river eroded the canyon?
    No.
  14. One a geological scale, was Mount Saint Helens eruption a major catastrophe? What does that tell you about the kinds of geological formations that could be formed in a major catastrophe?
The Mount Saint Helens eruption, on a geological scale is considered minor. This tells us that a major catastrophe would most likely result in larger deposits of stratified rock and larger canyons.
  15. What did Mount Saint Helens eruption have that a major flood would have?
    It had mudflows
  16. What is so important about the Cumberland Bone Cave when it comes to the question uniformitarianism versus catastrophism?
The Cumberland Bone Cave is a fossil graveyard that contains many different fossils from several different climates. This is important because it is excellent evidence for a worldwide flood and is a major problem for the uniformitarian viewpoint.
  17. Do fossils require millions of years to form?
    No
  18. What is a paracomformity?
An uncomformity that doesn't really exist in a geological formation but uniformitarians believe must exist because of the fossils found in the formation.
  19. List at least four problems with uniformitariansim as discussed in the text.
    1. The are too many fossils in the fossil record

    2. Fossils such as the Tyronnosaurus Rex bone that contain soft tissue are hard to understand in the uniformitarian framework.

    3. Fossil graveyards with fossils from many different climates are hard to understand in the uniformitarian view.

    4. Index fossils are into question by the many creatures we once thought were extinct but no know are not.
  20. What are the three problems with catastrophism that were discussed?
    1. Catastrophists have offered no good explanation for the existence of unconformities between rock layers laid down by the flood.

    2. Catastrophists cannot explain certain fossil structures that look like they were formed under "normal" living conditions that would not exist during the flood.

    3. Catastrophists have not yet explained the enormous chalk we find in terms of the Flood.
  21. Why does the fossil record offer no evidence for evolution?
The fossil record contains no fossils that are undeniably intermediate links
  22. Why does the fossil record offer evidence for the idea that God created each plant and animal individualy?
The fossil record contains no fossils that are undeniably intermediate links
