  3. what does an Oral cancers screening entail? do you touch them? pick at them?
    • 1. visually assess patients head, face , neck, ,ears, eyes for absence of symmetry, enlargemnets, swelling, dry or crusty areas, lesions and color changes.
    • 2. palpate lymph nodes to detect changes in size , consistency and mobility.
    • 3. observe the lips closed and open. note the color, texture and presence on the upper and lower vermillion border. Palpate the lips for changes in consistency and growth.
    • 4. Assess labial mucosa by pulling the lower lip away from the teeth to observe the labial mucosa and frena.  Look for changes in color, texture or swelling.
    • 5. Examine and palpate the buccal mucosa.
    • 6. Examine and palpate the gingiva.
    • 7. Observe the dorsum of the tongue for any swelling,  ulceration, coating, changes in the pattern of the papillae. or variation in size, color or texture. Grasp the tip of the tongue with a piece of gauze gently pull the tongue out and to the side to allow complete observation of the lateral surface right side and then the left. Palpate the tongue to feel for any growths.
    • 8. With the tongue raised, inspect the floor of the mouth for changes in color, texture, swellings or ulcerations. Bimanually palpate the sublingual area using the index finger of one hand inside the mouth and the fingertips of the other hand extraorally under the chin.
    • 9. With the patients head tilted back, obeserve the hard and soft palate. use a mouth mirror to intensify the light source. ask the patient to move the tongue forward and/or down to help to visually assess the oropharynx, including the anterior and posterior tonsillar pillars. Look for changes in color, texture, swellings, or ulcrations. Palpate the hard palate, taking care not to stimulate the patients gag reflex.
