Lab 3 Clinical considerations

  1. Cleft palate/lip
    occurs when right and left halves of the palate fail to join medially. This deviation leaves an opening between the mouth and nasal cavities that interferes with sucking and thus the baby's ability to nurse. It can also lead to inhalation of food into the nasal cavity and lungs, possibly resulting in pneumonia. This condition can be surgically repaired
  2. Caniostenosis
    skull deformity caused by premature closure of cranial sutures
  3. microcephaly
    an abnormally small cranium due to premature closure of one or more fontanels
  4. sinusitis
    inflammation of nasal sinuses
  5. septal defects
    nasal septum has a bend, chronic inflammation
  6. acromegaly
    a congenital disorder of the skeleton, too much growth hormone
  7. gigantism
    a congenital disorder of the skeleton, too much gh before puberty
  8. rickets
    a congenital disorder of the skeleton, not enough calcium or vitamin D3, weight bearing bones bow
  9. pituitary dwarfism
    a congenital disorder of the skeleton, not enough gh before puberty
  10. Achondroplasia
    a congenital disorder of the skeleton, abnormal epiphyseal activity
  11. osteopetrosis
    a congenital disorder of the skeleton, mass of skeleton inc. due to decrease in osteoclast activity
  12. osteogenesis
    a congenital disorder of the skeleton, disorganization of collagen fibers
  13. byperostosis
    a congenital disorder of the skeleton, excessive bone formation
  14. Marfan's syndrome
    a congenital disorder of the skeleton, defective connective tissue structure
  15. Heterotopic bone formation
    bones that develop in unusual places
