Respiration is the process by which energy is released from food.

This is when energy is released from food using oxygen and takes place in most cells.

Anaerobic respiration is when energy is released from food and doesn't involve oxygen. It takes place in some cells such as some bacteria and yeast.

Sensitivity is the ability of organisms to detect and respond to changes in the environment or within themselves

These changes are caused by stimuli and are detected by receptors (sense organs) e.g. light is a stimulus detected by the eyes which are our receptors. Plants detect sunlight and grow towards it.

Growth is the permanent increase in size and  complexity of an organism. Growth occurs by an increase in the number of cells and/or size of cells in an organism.

Reproduction is the process in which living organisms make new organisms with similar characteristics of their parents. Replication of the parents coded information needs to take place in order for the organisms to look and behave like their parents.

• There are two types of reproduction - a. Asexual reproduction - requires only one organism e.g. Bacteria, (binary fission), starfish, worms, sugar cane.
• b. Sexual reproduction - requires 2 organisms.

Excretion is the process by which waste and harmful substances are removed from the body. This waste and harmful substances are produced by the body's metabolism.

Metabolism is all of the chemical reactions taken place in the body. E.G. Ammonia is formed when the body breaks down protein. It is removed from the body as urea when we urinate. Ammonia is toxic.
